Learning Objectives:

  • Identify and explore the difference between individual model and systems conceptualizations in regards to family treatment and evaluate initial observations regarding how systems thinking aligns with Catholic anthropology on the human individual and family.
  • Identify and explain the benefits and limitations of a systemic case conceptualization for working with parents and teenagers in family therapy.
  • Learn basic, practical applications of Bowen Family Systems in family sessions, including the encouragement to think for self in regards to clinical work and theory implementation.

Rachel Elisa Gardner, MA, LPC is a Bowen Family Systems therapist in private practice in Austin, Texas at New Life Counseling Center. She has received two years of individual personal coaching in Bowen theory as well as two years of group training. She is currently the Bowen Theory trainer for the LPC-intern training program at New Life and continues both to coach — and learn! — within this collaborative clinical community. She thoroughly enjoys all conversations about theory and theology and continues to be amazed by the efficacy of this approach for helping families be transformed through relationship, science — and grace.
