Words with a Purpose: Transforming Childhood Trauma with Stories of Grace

Presented by Melissa Nichols LMFT & Denise Lacher MA, LP

Friday, April 29th 2:00 - 3:30pm: Lecture and Q&A

1.5 CEUs

Family Attachment and Counseling Center is a specialty clinic that works with individuals that suffer from complex trauma. Many of the children and adolescents we serve have significant histories of abandonment, abuse and neglect, including prenatal exposure to drugs and alcohol. FACC uses an integrated, experiential model to treat complex trauma. Our foundational technique incorporates Family Attachment Narrative Therapy to heal the misbeliefs formed by abandonment, neglect and abuse. In the process of creating and telling stories, parents/caregivers challenge the mistaken beliefs of their child and speak truth of God’s love and purpose. This process transforms the hearts and minds of both the narrators and listeners of these stories. Learn how FANT can enhance your current parenting or therapy through concrete ways to incorporate stories of transformation.

Target Audience: Counselors, social workers, psychologists, marriage and family therapists, counselor educators and supervisors

Course Content Level: Advanced

Learning Objectives:

  • Distinguish how to assist parents/caregivers or self in using narratives with their children to strengthen attachment, process trauma and learn new skills.
  • Measure the importance of experiential approaches in assessing the internal working model, regulating emotions and behavior and helping children and adults to overcome their trauma
  • Classify what factors might interfere with the attachment process and how to remediate those issues and build stronger relationships within families.
