The Catholic Psychotherapy Association 2026 Conference

October 22-24, 2026 - Franciscan University Steubenville, Ohio

The 2026 Catholic Psychotherapy Association Conference, titled The Promise of Virtue: The Path to Spiritual, Physical, Mental, and Social Health, will focus on the transformative power of virtue as a foundation for holistic well-being. Grounded in Catholic anthropology, this event will explore how virtue fosters spiritual, physical, mental, and social health, integrating mental health sciences with Catholic thought.

The conference will provide a comprehensive and balanced understanding of the human person, emphasizing how the cultivation of virtue addresses contemporary mental health challenges. By combining scientific research, clinical expertise, and the teachings of the Church, we aim to equip mental health professionals with the insights and tools necessary to promote authentic healing. Our mission is to empower practitioners to guide individuals toward a life of virtue, resilience, and flourishing, fostering holistic well-being in mind, body, and spirit. Ultimately, the 2026 conference envisions a future where Catholic psychotherapy, grounded in virtue, transforms lives and strengthens communities.

Day of Reflection - Thursday October 22, 2026

This day is dedicated to prayer, meditation, and thoughtful discussions, aimed at fostering a deeper connection between faith and mental health practices.

The Art of Living, the Freedom to Love, and the Freedom to Fail

We are honored to have Dr. Sri present The Art of Living: The Cardinal Virtues and the Freedom to Love and Virtue and The Freedom to Fail and have the opportunity for Q&A.

The secular world not only has lost faith; it has lost the art of living–we don’t even know the basics of how to live friendship, dating, marriage and family life anymore.  If we are going to have authentic friendships, build solid marriages and raise children well in this culture, we must rediscover the great tradition of the virtues. Drawing from his book, The Art of Living: The Cardinal Virtues and the Freedom to Love, Dr. Edward Sri shows how love requires virtue. Only people who intentionally grow in virtue can give the best of themselves to their friends, their spouse, and their children. Virtue gives us the freedom to love. Anyone can say “I love you.” Some people might sincerely mean it. But only those who have virtue possess the freedom to love. Unfortunately, it is this great tradition of the virtues that is being withheld from us in our secular culture.

Wholeness & Holiness through Pope Benedict XVI

Society is experiencing an epidemic of dislocation from tradition, identity, truth, and community. Pope Benedict XVI has diagnosed this epidemic as stemming from “practical atheism…an eclipse of God.” As a result, there is a fragmented wound to the human person that impedes freedom, moral and virtue formation, and human flourishing. Drawing upon Pope Benedict’s XVI fundamental theology and modern psychological scholarship, this presentation discusses how unity and integration are pathways to psychological healing and holiness.

The Theological and Cardinal Virtues as the Cornerstone of Childhood Neurodevelopment

Based on the synthesis of neuroscience research in interpersonal neurobiology with regard to attachment, neuroplasticity, and stress sensitivity along with the CASEL five core competencies, we will discuss our Catholic framework for childhood neurodevelopment as outlined in our book Raised in Grace: Made for Wholeness. We will discuss how the theological and cardinal virtues align with this research to wire the childhood brain for goodness, mental well-being and flourishing in young adulthood. The practice of the theological virtues of faith, hope, and love create a crucial “holding environment” that supports secure attachment needed for healthy brain development. The cardinal virtues support neuroplasticity to wire in “yes” brain fundamentals. St. John Bosco and brain-aligned preventive discipline emphasizes helping children to regulate their nervous system through connection over compliance.
