An update from CPA President Ian Masson:
I have had some good dialogue with APA and am thankful to APA President Dr. Wendi Williams for her responsiveness. There have been several exchanges regarding pediatric gender dysphoria (PGD) since our Open Letter. From those communications, I have gathered the following conclusions:
- APA has not replied to us regarding the November 2025 HHS Report,
- APA still supports the medical pathway as a potential treatment for PGD,
- APA allows a psychotherapy-only treatment course within the scope of care,
- APA commits to the best science available to influence the course of treatment, and
- Support still persists from mental health governing bodies for allowing the medical pathway, and new findings and rulings find harm and damage by the medical pathway.
Given these conclusions, the treatment of PGD with an “affirmation only” model at minimum warrants caution. CPA member clinicians should operate accordingly.
